Report on my Switzerland Excursion from 5th to 10th of May, 2007

| Die zweite Maiwoche 2008 verbrachte ich in der Schweiz, wo ich verschiedene Populationen der diversen Vipera aspis Unterarten besuchte. Natürlich hielt ich auch nach anderen Amphibien und Reptilien Ausschau, was aber leider nicht von großem Erfolg gekrönt war. |
The second week of May 2008 I spent in Switzerland. There I had a look to different populations of the Aspviper, Vipera aspis. Surely, I tried to observe other herps too, but this was not so successfull. |
Dienstag, 6. und Mittwoch, 7. Mai:
Zusammen mit Erika und Freddy Kappeler besuchte ich eine Population der Alpenviper, Vipera aspis "atra". Diese Unterart wurde nach neuesten Erkenntnissen in die Nominatform eingegliedert. Im Laufe der 2 Tage konnten wir etwa 15 Vipern finden, fotografieren und filmen.
Der besuchte Lebensraum im Berner Oberland befindet sich zwischen 1.220 und 1.300 Metern Seehöhe |
Tuesday, May 6th and Wednesday, May 7th:
Together with Erika and Freddy Kappeler I visited a population of the Alpviper, Vipera aspis "atra". This subspecies is included now in the nominate race.
During these two days we have been lucky to find, fotograph and filme about 15 vipers. The habitat visited in the "Berner Oberland" is between 1.220 and 1.300 metres above sealevel. |

| Die Lebensräume der in höheren Lagen des selben Tales vorkommenden Kreuzotter, Vipera berus waren noch von hohem Schnee bedeckt. Eine einsame Bergeidechse, Zootoca vivipara entzog sich dem Fotographieren in eine Gesteinsspalte. |
The habitats of the Common adder, Vipera berus in the same valley are at higher altitudes and have been still covered by a thick layer of snow.
The only seen one Zootoca vivipara run into a rock crevice before beeing fotographed. |

| Schau Dir bitte auch die Filme an. Dort siehst Du den Beginn einer Paarung zwischen zwei schwarzen Alpenvipern und ein "buntes" Männchen auf der Suche nach einem Weibchen. |

Donnerstag, 8. Mai
Zusammen mit Anita und Alain Aegaerter, der dort beruflich zu tun hatte, besuchten wir das Wallis in der Südwestschweiz. Die Nachsuche am Genfer See nach Würfelnattern blieb leider erfolglos, doch konnten wir entlang des Seufers immer wieder Mauereidechsen, Podarcis muralis finden.
Bei Martigny im Rhonetal fanden wir zwischen Weingärten Lacerta bilineata, Podarcis muralis, eine juvenile Aspisviper sowie eine erschlagene Blindschleiche, Anguis fragilis. |
Thursday, May 8th:
Together with Anita and Alain Aegaerter - he had some work there - we drove to the Wallis in the southwest part of Switzerland. Looking for the introduced Tessellated or Dice Snake, Natrix tessellata at the southeast shore of lake Genf was without success, but we could observe many Wall lizards, Podarcis muralis.
Near Martigny in the Rhone valley at southfacing slopes between vineyards we found Lacerta bilineata, Podarcis muralis, a juvenile Aspviper as well as a killed slow worm, Anguis fragilis. |

Freitag, 9. Mai
Alain zeigte mir einen Lebensraum der Nominatform der Aspisviper, Vipera aspis aspis in der Nähe des Bieler Sees.
Leider konnten wir dort nur ein einzelnes Weibchen und mehrere Mauereidechsen finden, obwohl dort noch vor kurzer Zeit eine größere Population der Aspisviper lebte. Ein Arbeiter erzählte uns, dass er in den letzten Wochen auch nur dieses eine Weibchen sah und vor wenigen Tagen eine Viper auf dem Weg erschlagen wurde. |
Friday, May 9th:
Allain showed me the habitat of the nominate race of the Aspviper, Vipera aspis aspis near lake Biel.
Unfortunately we found only one female and some Podarcis muralis. Although this place inhabited a good population of vipers in the last years. A worker told us, he could observe also only this female
during the last weeks and one viper was killed before a few days on the dustroad beside the stone wall. |

Samstag, 10. Mai
